In its Climate Protection Plan 2050, the German government has formulated goals and principles for limiting global warming to below two degrees Celsius compared with pre-industrialization levels. One measure is the energy turnaround with the phase-out of coal-fired power generation. The lignite mining regions are therefore facing far-reaching upheavals. The federal government supports these regions with funding programs to shape structural change and as an opportunity to develop a sustainable economy. The Anhalt-Bitterfeld district benefits from this as part of the Central German mining region.
